This young explorer remembers that he was part of a scientific ballooning expedition. He awoke on a barge headed towards what appeared to be a large city. Through a tattered journal he was clutching, he has inferred that that his expedition launched a number of months ago from somewhere along the pacific coast of the north american continent. Charts, tables, and incomprehensible diagrams have all bled together. Any meaningful hints as to the purpose and destination of his journey-and even to his own identity- have been removed irreparably from the book. All he learned by leafing through the pages is that his last name begins with S and that he is roughly 18 years of age.
He has decided his name is now Stanley until he can find his original (or a better one). A list of provisions was left more or less legible as if the water were mocking his loss of memory. This jarring loss is not made any better by speaking to creatures he thought were extinct. Despite all of his confusion, he retains a strong sense of self and purpose. The journal also had three other blurry lines and ages next to his own apparent name. This fact gives him hope that he may still have some chance of finding out who he is, and a solid determination to seek out any remaining survivors from the crash.
